HRC61 - Iceland statement - Item 4: General Debate
Human Rights Council – 61st Session
Item 4: General Debate
Statement delivered by Iceland
16 March 2026
Mr. President,
Iceland is deeply alarmed by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East which has added another dimension to an already profound human rights crisis. We call for de-escalation, the protection of civilians and full respect for international law, and encourage a return to diplomatic dialogue.
Palestinians continue to face appalling conditions, particularly in Gaza, where basic needs are far from being met. Iceland reiterates its call for full, safe and unhindered humanitarian access, as well as access for journalists and United Nations investigators.
We further condemn recent Israeli decisions to expand its unlawful presence in the West Bank and stresses the importance of safeguarding the work of United Nations agencies, including UNRWA, and supporting civil society organisations.
Iceland reiterates its strong support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and to the implementation of the two-State solution, with Palestine and Israel living side by side in peace and security.
Iceland condemns in the strongest terms Russia’s ongoing illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. Russia’s grave violations of international human rights and humanitarian law must end, including the targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure, the unlawful deportation of children, torture, and the systematic use of sexual and gender-based violence.
Those responsible for violations of international law and atrocity crimes must be brought to justice.
In Afghanistan, the institutionalized and systematic oppression of women remains deeply concerning and Iceland supports efforts to codify these crimes in international law.
Iceland reiterates its concern about the serious human rights situation in China, including in Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Tibet. We urge China to fulfil its international human rights obligations, uphold the right to freedom of expression and ensure the protection of persons belonging to minorities.
In Sudan, we are alarmed by the credible reports on war crimes and crimes against humanity – bearing the hallmarks of genocide – as reported by the Fact-Finding Mission. The crimes committed in El Fasher must not be repeated. Urgent protection and accountability is vital.
In closing, Iceland refers to Nordic-Baltic statements, including on Iran, Palestine, Sudan, South Sudan, Myanmar, Ukraine, Syria, Belarus, DPRK and Venezuela.
I thank you.
