Statement by Iceland (no 40 of 95)

Mr. President,

Iceland welcomes the delegation of Panama and its national report.

In the spirit of constructive engagement, Iceland recommends the following:

  1. Reform law No. 7 of 2018 into a comprehensive anti-discrimination law that includes SOGIESC as grounds for protection.
  2. Eliminate plea bargaining in cases of gender-based violence, including femicides.
  3. Legalize abortion in all cases and ensure safe access to abortion services.
  4. Ensure access to comprehensive sexuality education in and out of school settings.
  5. Introduce a transparent administrative self-identification process for legal gender recognition free from intrusive requirements.
  6. Incorporate the explicit classification of hate crimes motivated by SOGIESC into the Penal Code.
  7. Ban conversion therapy.

I wish Panama all success for its review.

I thank you.
