HRC60 - JST - FFM on Venezuela
JOINT STATEMENT
FACT FINDING MISSION - VENEZUELA
22 september 2025
Thank you Mr. President,
I have the honor to speak on behalf of Colombia and a group of countries and to thank the International Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela for its update, whose work is essential to document allegations and support victims.
We express our deep concern over the growing number of people deprived of liberty in Venezuela for political reasons. Any detention must be governed by the principles of due process: access to adequate defense, dignified conditions of detention, and full respect for human dignity.
It is also essential to guarantee consular assistance to foreign nationals in detention, in accordance with the 1963 Vienna Convention. We reiterate the request regarding citizens of several countries, whose situation has already been raised at the highest level, and for whom it is urgent to have clear information and timely consular attention.
We join international calls for the rights of all detained persons in Venezuela to be respected and protected, urging that independent monitoring of these situations be allowed. These guarantees are key to restoring public trust and ensuring that institutions act in accordance with international human rights standards.
Finally, we reaffirm our readiness to contribute constructively to all efforts aimed at protecting victims and creating conditions of justice.
Thank you
