HRC60 - NB8 statement - EID on Myanmar

Human Rights Council 60th Session

Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on reports of HC and Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar

Statement delivered by Estonia on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden

8 September 2025

Mr President,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States.

We reiterate our strong support for the critical work of the IIMM. Its latest report provides further evidence of serious crimes, including war crimes and crimes against humanity committed across Myanmar. We are alarmed by the rise in deliberate attacks on civilians and critical civilian infrastructure such as schools, places of worship, and medical facilities. Such acts are utterly unacceptable.

We commend the Mechanism’s approach in documenting crimes against children and placing this issue at the forefront of its agenda. Perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to justice before impartial courts.

We welcome the notable progress made by the IIMM in ongoing judicial proceedings during the reporting period, which represents, above all, an important step in advancing accountability for crimes committed against the Rohingya population. These efforts send a clear message that justice will be pursued, and those responsible for violations of international law will be held accountable.

We are concerned about the liquidity crisis facing the Mechanism, which threatens its vital mandate. We must work together to overcome these challenges.

Mr Koumjian, what more can be done to stop Myanmar military’s attacks on civilians?

I thank you.
